about

Started in the year 2015, ‘Spirit of the lakes chorus’ began when Linda and Beth met each other at the ‘New York music fest’. As both competed in solo singing, and won first and second place respectively, the chance acquaintance led to friendship. The common desire to do something bigger led to Linda being introduced to Beth’s friends. Selena and Diana joined in, and together the four started composing and singing at various events, large and small.

The fact that they did not want this group to limit only to their names, led to a simple idea. Every Sunday, they would conduct an open mic, where women could come and sing. Those interested would then be mentored and imbibed into their group. Over the past five years, the group has grown to have mentored over 100 women, of which 20 are a regular part of the choir.

As this group travels around, spreading its love for music and singing in their unique style, it has won many hearts and much praise all over the state. They have performed in many events, and won many awards as well. Bringing songs and performances straight from their hearts, this group is high on energy, and is all about fun, and spreading joy and laughter.

Having performed at city, state and national level as well, this group is part of the prestigious ‘Chorus together’, a national level group of chorus singers. As their latest album ‘We are alive, we are together’, touches hearts across the state, this group brings hope to many people across the world, as everyone combats these difficult times.

Linda hails from Kentucky, where she attended the school of music. An active participant, she also led the chorus group at college. A passion for singing and performance was a part of this bright-eyed girl’s persona, and she brings this high energy to the group.

Beth is from New York city, which is home to many wonderful musical performances and schools. Having majored in music at New York’s school of music and dance, she met Linda in Chicago at ‘The Great Lakes’ music festival. While Beth won the second prize here, she still shares that perhaps the friendship with Linda was ‘the bigger award’. They both realized that they had a common passion to make a difference, and kick-started by naming their group the ‘Spirit of the Lakes Chorus’.

Beth introduced Linda to Selena and Diana in New York, when Linda came for a music show to New York City. The rest as they say is history. Selena, known for her soulful poetry added the element of lyrics to this group, while Diana brought her expertise with audio and recording support. The four have been together ever since, performing live shows across various states, and exploring the world of music together.

The thought to make their group bigger and embrace more singers became central to this band’s work, and soon open mic sessions became popular. Much attended, today their open mic sessions are looked forth to, by singers and performers alike.
